Coming to LRMC? - 45 days prior to arrival

PLEASE READ

LRMC Advance Information 2020-21

You must forward your CURRENT HIPPA and CyberAwareness (IA) certificates in advance of your arrival - at least 20 days.
You will need to complete an AUP  with a digital (CAC signed) signature.
Finally, you will need to complete the DD2875 with digital signature (CAC signed)

Otherwise you will not have computer access upon arrival.

ONLY RESIDENTS, FELLOWS and ATTENDINGS
State where licensed:
Expiration (mo/yr) of license:

Please notify me if dates change after airline reservations are made.

Security here much tighter than CONUS and thus we will ensure that your security is good to go; please check with your local security office to make sure that you are not about to expire (this needs to be renewed every 10 years).

In-processing can only happen on weekdays, recommend you arrive on a weekend day, if at all possible, to recover from jet lag and to get out and enjoy being in Europe.  The Education Bldg near the exit only Gate #4 across the street from the Atzel bldg 3200 on the 3rd floor is where there are people to help you.

Out-processing is scheduled to happen on Mon. Wed. or Fri.  Please plan at least 2-3 hours for out-processing (we are small so offices can sometimes be empty) please plan to out-process at least the day before you catch your plane.

Housing –  please see this page for making housing arrangements off-post. Please note that residents have the priority for the housing as their rotations are fulfilling requirements and they can be on-call.

Passes - passes are now being required if you will be crossing the border or going over 200 miles form LRMC.  There is a page in the blog that describes what needs to be done

Leave - let someone know in advance if you will be requesting leave at the beginning or end of this rotation.  Make sure that your orders reflect leave time especially if it goes over 30 days.

LRMC Advance Information 2017-18 - WHAT TO BRING

Things to bring:

Passport – do NOT travel in uniform
http://www.defensetravel.dod.mil/site/news.cfm?ID=18 - your CAC ID number will let you fly TSA Pre-Check
ACLS/BLS cards
Immunization records, with proof of PPD status and hepatitis vaccination
BDU/ACU, required for inprocessing/outprocessing
Camera (not required): it is permitted to take clinical photos of patients/wounds, as long as identifying features are not included and you are not disruptive of patient care in the process.
Any reference material/pocket guides etc. that you use

Money and Obtaining Euros:
Do this at an ATM machine, never use an exchange service.  There are machines at the airports and here at the hospital.   Call your bank before departure, ask about fees and let them know the dates you are traveling and which countries and that you will be on military instillations - this means it will look like you are in NY when using ATMs on post.  You don’t want them to cancel your card because of unusual activity.  Almost everything on US military instillations in Europe can be purchased in US dollars.  ATM’s at LRMC do not charge fees, just exchange fees for Euros.  Do not use a currency exchange, even the worst ATM fees will be less.

Transportation from Frankfurt International Airport to LRMC:
Disclaimer: (this information is updated regularly, but no guarantees)

There are several shuttle services available (“flug-zubringer”).  You will need to reserve with one of them in advance.  Prices vary depending on number of passengers, roughly 50 Euro one way and 85 Euro round trip. Make sure you understand where to meet them when you leave baggage claim.  There are two main terminals, 1 and 2.  If you tell the shuttle your airline and flight number they will know where to find you.

If you have never flown internationally before: you will get off the plane, clear immigration with  your passport (get in one of the “non-EU citizen” lines), then go to baggage claim, potentially waiting a long time for your bags, finally clear customs with your bags and exit into the main airport.

Please pay careful attention to where the shuttle service will meet you.

CAR RENTAL - Please, do NOT plan to get a car!!  If you do decide to rent one, then do it here at Ramstein, not the airport.
Many cars will have a GPS in them.  You will need to purchase insurance as you are most likely NOT covered here in Europe.  You do not need to get an installation permit for the vehicle, just show your military ID every time you drive on base.  You can rent a car with your military ID and a US driver’s license.  Most of the cars are standard (stick shift).

Information that is helpful:
-        Make sure you have an electrical outlet adapter for Europe.  The outlets are 220V here.  Most electronic devices have built in voltage adapters (iPhone, laptops, camera charges, etc) but the plug adapter is what you need. (can be purchased at the shoppette)
-        Gym on base

Arrival at LRMC via Ramstein Airport (SPACE-A)

We are looking forward to your time here at LRMC.

Please take extra care to blend into your surroundings as much as possible with all the turbulence happening.  Specifically, make sure you do not travel in uniform.

The itinerary:

Arrival at Ramstein
•       Let me know where you are coming from and when your plane is scheduled to arrive.  I will let you know if I can meet you there and bring you to Landstuhl.  This is a 10 minute drive.

•       If I can't meet you then catch a Taxi or arrange with a shuttle they are at the "airport"

•      If you have been notified that there is space available in the apartment on post then:
DROP-OFF at bldg 3855 on Walter Reed Dr. You will need to enter through Gate 3.
Otherwise, please go straight to your accommodations.

Regarding tips for the driver and restaurants, round up.  There is a not a percentage of tipping here although most German's have figured out that the Americans don't know any better and take advantage of it.  I would pay the set fee for the van and then offer a 2 euro tip (1 euro/bag) the 1 and 2 euro pieces are coins.
Weather wise; we are at the same latitude as Maine.  Also, bring something for wet weather, it rains a lot here and can go from sunny to downpour in minutes. (think Washington State)

What to expect on your inprocessing day:
        Go eat Breakfast
08:15 - Meet me outside the DFAC in the hall
08:30 @ Occupational Health - you will need cover as we must go outside
                      - have HARD copy of PPD (less than 12mos) / immunizations
09:00 – Badge, Network access, orientation to the hospital
11:00 - you should be finished.
