Going to Paris? hints and tips

make sure you http://travel.state.gov/content/passports/english/alertswarnings.html

Travel to Paris information:

Want to find a good place to eat and not be out a lot of money: Les Petites Tables

For Active Duty military ... you can also look at the military hotels:
Cercle National des Armées: Saint-Augustin or Hotel Sainte-Genevieve or Hotel LaCordaire
web: www.cnaparis.com
Instead of creating an account you can send them an email with your information:
- Your officer rank and your family name:
- Your state: active
- The number of rooms and the number of guests per room:
- Date of arrival and date of departure:
- Your home address and your phone number:

Baggage Storage:
On the Metro level is a baggage locker/left luggage room tucked into a corner behind some escalators.  Baggage storage at Paris train stations ranges from 5€ for small lockers to 9,50€ for large ones fitting about 2 large roller suitcases.  Maximum duration of storage is 48 hours.  You’ll need to pass through a quick security checkpoint in order to store your bags, not unlike the security done for boarding a plane.

A single ticket will take you anywhere within the city of Paris on the Métro and RER networks, and you can transfer between lines--or between the Métro and the RER (but not buses)--on the same ticket.  Keep hold of your ticket until you have completed your journey, as you may be asked to show it if tickets are being inspected. If you cannot produce proof of payment for the ticket inspectors, you may risk paying a fine. This ticket, valid for zones 1 and 2, allows you to travel anywhere in Paris, and even beyond, since it will take you to the end of each metro line, even if it is located in zone 3 (as for example La Défense on line 1).
Sortie: Exit
Billets: Tickets  to buy a single ticket or hold up the number of fingers for how many tickets you want: "un billet, s'il vous plait" each ticket is €1,70
Un carnet: Pack of ten metro tickets
A pack of metro tickets, please: Un carnet, s'il vous plaît. (Uhn kar-nay, seel voo pleh) it will be €12,70
The ticket machines will not take your credit card, it is best to use cash with them or just go to a window.
Eiffel Tower,  Elevator hours: 0930-2345; Stair hours 0930 – 1800.  In Jan and Feb they only sell the tickets to the top from the 2nd floor because of weather.  Prices: €8,50 using elevator to 2nd floor; stairs are €5,00; to the top is €14.00
You can visit the Eiffel Tower at night, when the crowds are likely to be smaller and you can enjoy the magic of the hourly light show from the viewing platforms.  At Christmas there was a booth that let us pre-buy a reservation/ticket for the restaurant Le 58 Tour and move to the front of the elevator line.  If they are finished with renovating the restaurant (12.22.2012 per website) this is a great place to eat lunch.
